Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell cycle mutant cdc9 is defective in DNA ligase

IN the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae a number of mutants potentially defective in DNA replication have been isolated 1–3 . However, the only defective gene product so far identified in any of these mutants is that in cdc 21 which is defective in thymidylate synthetase 4,5 . We report here that cdc 9–l, isolated by Hartwell as a conditional cell cycle mutant 6 , is defective in a DNA ligase involved in both replication and repair of DNA. A mutant with similar properties has recently been described in Schizosaccharomyces pombe 7 .
