A Comparative Study Of Oral Premedication In Children With Ketamine and Midazolam
摘要:
Sixty children of ASA grade I, aged 1 to 10 years, undergoing minor surgery of less than thirty minutes duration were selected for this study. They were randomly allocated into two groups of thirty each. Group A received ketamine orally (6mgkg-1) and group a received Midazolam orally (0.5mgkg-1) Parenteral formulation of both the drugs were given to the children to swallow after mixing with sugar. The children were separated from their parents thirty minutes after ingestion of the drug and were taken inside the operation theatre. An intravenous cannula 22 G was placed. Acceptability of the drug, time of onset of sedation, anxiety level at the time of separation from parents and at IV cannulation were noted. Any side effect after ingestion of the drug until six hours in the post-operative period was looked for. Time of recovery from anaesthesia was noted. It was observed that both the drugs were well accepted by the children. Sedation and anxiolysis was better in ketamine group both during separation from parents and at IV cannulation. Recovery time in both groups was less than 30 min. Recovery is smooth in ketamine group whereas recovery in Midazolam group is associated with irritability and crying. There were minimal side effects in both the groups. This study concludes that oral premedication with 6 mgkg-1 of ketamine is better than 0.5 mgkg-1 of midazolam.Keywards : Paediatric anaesthesia: Oral premedication : Ketamine: Midazolam.
