摘要:

partnership with UC Berkeley in the area of African Stud- ies. The CASA Africanists are excited about working with an outstanding group at Berkeley that includes CASA alum Donald Moore, as well as anthropologist Marianne Ferme, geographers Michael Watts and Gillian Hart, and many others.Research interests of the new CASA faculty build on and broaden existing CASA strengths, especially in the areas of nationalism, the state, ethnic identity, transna- tional cultural processes, and the political economy of de- velopment. Liisa Malkki's research has explored questions of national identity and historical memory among Bu-rundian refugees living in Tanzania. Her book, Purity and Exile: Vio-lence, Memory, and NationalCosmology among Hutu Refu-gees in Tanzania, was publishedin 1995, and was awarded theAmaury Talbot Prize by the Roy-al Anthropological Institute. Hermore recent work has focusedon such topics as human rightsdiscourses and humanitarian prac-tices as transnational cultural forms;displacement, racism, and the po-litical imagination of "foreignness";and the interrelationships betweennationalism and internationalism. She is currently completing a bookmanuscript on the role of day-to-dayimprovisation in the fieldwork process, and is also working on a book exploring competing visions of interna- tional order in the post-WWII period. My own research has involved field research in Le- sotho, where I explored "development" discourse and the micro-politics of "development" projects (The Anti-politics Machine: `Development', Depoliticization, and Bureau- cratic Power in Lesotho, 1990), and changing forms of ur- ban culture and social membership among mineworkers on the Zambian Copperbelt (Expectations of Modernity: Myths and Meanings of Urban Life on the Zambian Copper- belt, 1999). I have also published two theoretically focused edited collections together with CASA's Akhil Gupta, both dealing with contemporary challenges to the spatializing and totalizing implications of the anthropological concept of "culture", and the issues these raise for the practice of anthropology as a discipline. I am also currently working on a book of critical essays that address "globalization"
