Summary Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) reversibly inhibited extension of neuntes in mouse neuroblastoma cells in vitro at levels which did not significantly retard growth. This inhibition occurred when neuntes were induced to extend either by removal of serum or by addition of dibutyrylcyclic adenosine monophosphate to complete medium. Inhibition was reversed with time, however, even in the continued presence of DMSO in serum-free medium. At similar concentrations of DMSO in serum-free medium, induction of acetylcholinesterase activity was not inhibited.
