This paper describes the key techniques for constructing a large scale 3D terrain model, including terrain segmentation, multi - resolution model management, multilevel texture mapping. This paper presentes a dynamic management method for real - time rendering the model. Some steps are tried for embedding the culture features into 3D terrain models. At last, we do some experiments and the results are listed in the paper. The experiments show it is possible to real - time navigate the large scale 3D terrain scene on a normal personal computer if the methods in this paper are applied.
