1453246 Heat-resistant laminates UNITED MERCHANTS & MFRS Inc 18 March 1974 [20 March 1973] 11822/74 Heading B5N A flexible heat-resistant laminate comprises a series of layers bonded together, said layers comprising a top layer of a transparent heat resistant polyester film, e.g. biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate, a second layer of flexible non- woven fibrous strengthening material, e.g. a hard, calendered paper, a third layer of a flexible metal foil heat sink, e.g. copper, tin or aluminium foil, a fourth layer of a pressure-sensitive adhesive and a bottom layer of a release sheet, e.g. kraft paper coated with a cured silicone. The pressure-sensitive adhesive may comprise a two-component system, one component being either an intrinsically tacky polymer or resin or a mixture of a polymer or resin with a resin imparting tackiness, the other component being a material of low tensile strength. Specified intrinsically tacky polymers are polyacrylic or polymethacrylic esters and acids, polyvinyl ethers, copolymers of a vinyl ether and an acrylic or methacrylic acid or ester, polyisobutylene, polybutene, natural rubber, polyisoprene, polyvinyl esters, polychloroprene, polybutadiene and butadiene-styrene copolymers. Specified tackifying resins are hydrocarbon resins, terpene resins, hydrogenated resin and esters thereof, liquid polystyrene, polyvinyl butyl ether, polyvinyl ethyl ether, polyvinyl methyl ether, polybutacrylate and copolymers of butylacrylate with butyl methacrylate. The film may be bonded to the fibrous layer by an adhesive, e.g. a polyester/isocyanate reaction product, a phenol-formaldehyde resin or a melamineformaldehyde resin which may be pigmented; alternatively, the adhesive may be transparent and the fibrous layer decoratively printed. The fibrous layer may be bonded to the metal foil by and adhesive, e.g. a cross-linked polyester, phenol-formaldehyde resin, acrylic resin, melamine-formaldehyde resin or a homo- or copolymer of vinyl acetate. The products of the invention, a method for the manufacture of which is disclosed, may be used for interior decoration, e.g. for facing furniture and cabinetry.
