The article discusses the dwindling supply of phosphate rocks that might eventually lead to its nonexistence within the century. However, the discovery of Don Mavinic, a civil engineer at the University of British Columbia, on struvite, a phosphate-based fertilizer, might solve this shortage. Mavinic found a way to make struvite a green fertilizer and was commercially used by treatment plants in 2007. Struvites are the solid cruds that forms in pipes and pumps when bacteria are used to clean up sewerage sludge.
