In a process and apparatus for the thermal treatment of pulverised material, the waste gas from the combustion zone, the waste air from the cooling zone (14, 14a, 14b) and the combined part streams of the material are fed to a single heating zone, whose waste gas is divided over the two trains (13a, 13b) of the preheating zone. This results in a simple piping arrangement for material and gas, coupled with low overall height. Moreover, a single heating device (15, 15') (precalcination device) with good distribution of the cooler waste air and scope for a simple by-pass connection suffices. <IMAGE>
