The invention relates to a preparation for cleaning or providing cosmetic care for the skin, teeth or hair or for cleaning smooth surfaces. Said preparation has an aqueous phase which contains a pre-gelatinised, cross-linked starch selected from a C2-C5- hydroxyalkyl starch and a C2-C18-acyl starch. Hydroxypropyl di-starch phosphate or di-starch-C4-C18-alkane or alkene dioates are preferred. The starch acts (1) as a stability-improving agent, (2) as a viscosity regulator, (3) as a (co)-emulsifier, (4) as an agent for providing smooth skin and (5) as an agent for improving hair properties.
