PURPOSE:To provide the title substance useful as a remedy for the cataract, etc., of diabetic complications and having an inhibitory activity against aldose reductase, by culturing a physiologically active substance M4582-producing bacterium belonging to the genus Paecilomyces. CONSTITUTION:A physiologically active substance M4582-producing bacterium [preferably Paecilomyces.lilacinus M4582 (FERM P-9758) belonging to the genus Paecilomyces] is cultured in a medium and the objective substance is collected from the cultured product. The culturing is preferably carried out at 17-36 deg.C and 1.8-8.2pH for 2-9 days.
