Conjugated diolefins with at least one vinyl double bond are polymerized in presence of a homogeneous catalyst prepared by reacting a hydrocarbon solution of a cobalt or nickel compound with an organoaluminium compound. An organic nitrogen base or organic compound of phosphorus, arsenic, antimony or bismuth may be used to form a hydrocarbonsoluble cobalt complex. In examples butadiene, optionally containing various impurities, gave the substantially cis-1:4 polymer using as catalysts i-Bu2AlCl/CoCl2/pyridine or Et2AlCl with (a) Co or Ni diethyldithiocarbamate, Ni(CO)4, (PhNH3)3[Co(NO2)6], Ni xanthogenate or Co naphthenate, (b) CoCl2 and pyridine, 2-methyl-5-ethylpyridine, n-hexylamine, pyrrole, morpholine, PO(OEt)3, P(OEt)3, PEt3, acetonitrile, dimethylformamide, ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, or (c) Co stearate/pyridine. Also mentioned generally as catalyst components are Co and Ni xanthogenates, dithiocarbamates, acetylacetonates, carbonyls, naphthenates, acetates, bromides and iodides; substituted pyridines and quinolines, aliphatic and aromatic amines, diamines and amides (e.g. acetamide, aniline), phenylhydrazines, aldoximes, ketoximes, alcohols, ketones, nitriles, phosphines, arsines, stibines, alkyl and arylalkyl phosphates and phosphites. Isoprene and 1:3-pentadiene are other specified monomers.
