The novel sesquiterpene hydroquinone isoarenarol (1) and the known compound arenarol (2) were isolated from extracts of the marine sponge Dysidea arenaria Bergquist as part of a search for new protein kinase inhibitors. Both 1 and 2 showed potent and selective protein kinase inhibition in vitro.Potent and selective inhibitors of protein kinases that have been identified as relevant molecular targets for treating cancer or diabetes represent potential lead compounds for the development of new drugs. As part of a program designed to discover new kinase inhibitors, several hundred marine invertebrate extracts have been screened for in vitro inhibitory activity against a panel of protein kinases.
