The present invention relates to light polarisers, to devices for displaying information and comprising such polarisers and, more precisely, to a liquid crystal display (LCD) element. This invention can be used in flat liquid crystal displays, including the projection-type ones, as well as in lighting fixtures, in optical modulators, in matrix systems for light modulation, etc. In order to produce a polariser and a LCD element comprising such a polariser, this invention uses at least one birefringent layer with anisotropic absorption, wherein said layer exhibits at least one refraction index which increases together with the wavelength of the light to be polarised, said layer having more precisely an abnormal dispersion. It is thus possible to produce dichroic- or interference-type polarisers and to provide for the practically complete conversion of the energy from a non-polarised radiation source into polarised radiation. The above-mentioned characteristics of this polariser, which comprises a birefringent layer with anisotropic absorption and has an abnormal dispersion, enable the production of a colour or monochromic LCD element which has a higher luminosity, an increased colour saturation as well as good angular characteristics and which is free from umbra.
