A metallized surface layer (60) is removed selectively (12) of an electro-sensitive substrate (10) by means of an electro printing to expose an intermediate patterned layer (50). The patterned layer may be exposed at random, or exposed in predetermined portions. Sheets, labels or the like can be printed electrically with unique identification codes such as alphanumeric characters printed in series. These sheets and labels can not be copied by conventional printing techniques. The patterned layers (50) can be printed by using inks of various surface texture, which translates into an embossing effect (Fig. 4) of the metallized layer. Alternatively, a lacquer layer (70) may be deposited between the patterned layer and the metallized surface to achieve a uniform appearance of the metallized surface.
