Experiments on sound radiation due to non-linear interaction of instability waves in a turbulent jet

A turbulent circular jet was excited at two frequencies ( f 1, f 2) and the pressure on the axis of the jet as well as in the far field was measured. The frequency components of the pressure at the combination frequencies f 1 f 2, f 1 + f 2, 2 f 1 f 2, 2 f 2 f 1, exhibit wave-like character in the near field, and a distinct directivity in the far field. The sound radiation at the difference frequency predominates over the other combination frequencies. A non-linear wave-guide model of the large structures of the turbulence is outlined.
