Sensitive spectrophotometric determination of carcinogenic alpha chloro ehters
摘要:
A number of chromogens was tested to find out the most suitable spectroscopic methods for sensitive determination of the carcinogenic alpha halo ethers, chloromethyl methyl ether (CMME) and bis(chloromethyl)ether (BCME). The latter compound can be dundh a detection limit of 10 ng by means of 2-hydrazono-2,3-dihydro-3-methyl-benzotriazole hydrochloride (HMBT). Colorimetric determination using 4-pyridine aldehyde-2-benzothiazolyl hydrazone (PBH) is also highly sensitive, indicating BCME and CMME with a detection limit of 10 ng and 15 ng, respectively. Chloromethyl methyl ether can be determined with the help of this chromogen at room temperature. Sensitive measurements are possible also by means of the Hantzsch reaction as modified by Nash, using acetyl acetone, ammonium chloride, and acetic acid. Dichloromethyl methyl ether, an analogue of the alkylating carcinogens, did not show measurable reactions in the same low concentration range. Using the PBH reaction it is possible to determine BCME in air in concentrations as low as 0.2 ppb even after the carcinogen has been adsorbed on Porapak Q.
