A surprisingly large amount of energy is not used by the conventional end uses of space heating, cooling, water heating, lighting, and cooking. In some cases, the miscellaneous uses of energy in a home are larger than the ones to which auditors and retrofitters devote the greatest attention. Put another way, the conventional audit is missing half the energy action in those homes. This article describes the significant miscellaneous uses of energy and related conservation measures. Specifically discussed are the following; waterbeds; well pumps; pool pumps; sump pumps, spas and hot tubs; dehumidifiers; aquariums, terrariums, and special pet facilities; automobile engine heaters; home computers; and furnace fans. 1 figure, 3 tables.
