The genetics of adiponectin

Adiponectin encoded by the APM1 gene, a protein exclusively secreted by adipose tissue, is thought to be involved in the modulation of insulin sensitivity. Indeed, its serum level correlates with insulin sensitivity and is low in patients presenting the metabolic insulin resistance syndrome (i.e. type 2 diabetes (T2D), obesity). Animal studies plead for an active role of the adiponectin protein on insulin sensitivity and energy homeostasis. Thus, the APM1 gene located in a chromosomal region linked with features of the insulin resistance syndrome appeared as a good candidate gene to this syndrome. From our results and recent reports from the literature, we present the results and the questions raised by the genetic investigations of this gene.
