Linear polyether-esters containing aromatic nuclei and phenoxy-ether linkages which may be melt spun to give filaments having good cold drawing properties are obtained by heating a cyclic glycol carbonate with a composition consisting of bifunctional compounds containing only phenolic and carboxylic ester functional groups, substantially equal numbers of phenolic and carboxylic ester groups being present, and the carboxylic ester groups being esters with a monohydroxy compound which is volatile under the reaction conditions. The composition may consist of a dihydric phenol and a terephthalic acid ester. The constituents of the composition may be present in combination as an ester of an aromatic mono-carboxylic acid having a nuclear hydroxyl group, e.g. an ester of phydroxy-benzoic acid. Thus by reacting dimethyl terephthalate, hydroquinone and cyclic ethylene carbonate, a polyester is obtained which is indistinguishable from the product obtained by reacting 1,4-dihydroxy-ethoxybenzene and dimethyl terephthalate as described in Specification 678,264. There are specified as reactants: (1) diphenols-hydroquinone, 2,5-dichlor-hydroquinone, 4,41-dihydroxy-3,5,31,51-or 2,5,21,51 - tetramethyl - diphenyl and 1,5-, 2,6- and 2,7-dihydroxy-naphthalenes; (2) dicarboxylic acids-particularly those linked to aromatic nuclei-terephthalic acid, 4,41-dicarboxy-diphenyl and 4,41-dicarboxy-a ,b -diphenoxyethane; (3) esters of nuclear chlorinated or methylated para-hydroxy-benzoic acids; (4) ester exchange catalysts-Na, K, and Li metals; alkali metal alcoholates; (4) cyclic carbonates-ethylene, trimethylene, propylene, 1,2- or 2,3-butylene carbonates. In examples: (1) equimolecular proportions of 4-hydroxy-benzoic acid and cyclic ethylene carbonate reacted in presence of magnesium ribbon at 230-280 DEG C.; (2) hydroquinone, dimethylterephthalate and cyclic ethylene carbonate were similarly reacted.
