A dye-containing polarizing film is disclosed. It contains a disazo dye represented by general formula (I), wherein Me represents a transition metal atom such as copper, nickel, zinc or iron, r represents a 1- or 2-naphthol residue which is bound to the azo group at a position adjacent to the hydroxy group forming a complex bond with the transition metal and which may be substituted by a sulfo group, a sulfonamido group, an animo group, an acylamino group, an allylamino group, or a hydroxy group not adjacent to the azo group, X and Y each represents a hyd-ogen atom, a C-C alkyl group, a lower alkoxy group, a carboxyl group, a sulfo group, a sulfonamido group, a sulfonal- kylamido group, an amino group, an acylamino group, a halogen or a nitro group, and Z represents a hydrogen atom, a C-C alkyl group or a lower alkoxy group, provided that formula (I) contains 1 to 3 sulfo groups. The film shows a higher durability than conventional dye-containing polarizing films and has nearly the same excellent polarizing performance as an iodine-containing polarizing film, thus being effectively utilized for optical uses including liquid crystal displays and CRT filters.
