Some properties of soluble ribonucleic acid from Escherichia coli

1 Soluble ribonucleic acid has been prepared from E. coli by the phenol method. 2 The hypochromicity and the reactivity with formaldehyde suggest that the molecule has intramolecular hydrogen bonds. 3 Its sedimentation coefficient is 4 s, and there is little concentration dependence in salt solutions. 4 In water the molecule extends and the concentration dependence of the sedimentation coefficient is increased. 5 The molecular weight, calculated from sedimentation, diffusion, and partial specific volume, is 25,500 ± 10%. 6 Evidence is presented suggesting that S-RNA is free, i.e. not bound to any large molecule, in cell-free extracts.
