The liposome composition containing a pharmaceutical agent entrapped, characterized by (a) the dimensions of liposomes comprised mainly between about 0.07 and 0.5 microns; (B) at least about 50 mole% of a lipid rigidifying the membrane, such as sphingomyelin or neutral phospholipids acyl chains primarily saturated; (C) between about 5 and 20 mol% of a glycolipid selected from the group consisting of ganglioside GM1, phosphatidylinositol and ester galactocerebroside sulfate. The liposomes having entrapped drug are administered as a suspension intravenously as a therapeutic treatment; these liposomes have a prolonged circulation time in the blood.
