Protists are microscopic eukaryoticmicrobes that are ubiquitous, diverse,and major participants in oceanic foodwebs and in marine biogeochemicalcycles. The study and characterizationof protists has a long and distinguishedtradition. Even with this history, theextraordinary species diversity and varietyof interactions of protists in the seaare only now being fully appreciated.
