An aqueous shampoo containing a long chain alkyl sulfate and/or long chain alkyl ether sulfate anionic surfactant, and a cationic di-long chain alkyl quaternary ammonium nitrogen-containing compound, unexpectedly increases the ability of the aqueous shampoo (1) to incorporate water-insoluble conditioning agents, particularly non- volatile silicone materials, and (2) to remove previously applied conditioning agents and other soiled conditioning agents and contaminants from the hair.
