In today's western society young women are faced with enormous pressure to be thin and this is linked to high rates of body dissatisfaction, especially among adolescents. A positive body image and self-esteem are two important protective factors against the development of eating disorders. Sports participation has been considered by some to lead to higher levels of self-esteem and a more positive body image. However, research focusing on adolescents remains limited and inconclusive.
