Speakerphones wer e desi gned by Bell Labs, in the 1950's for use with their telephones in order to provide hands free operation of a telephone. The original usage ended up primarily as business applications since it was found that the concept of hands free telephones appealed to executives, and anyone who considered himself to be an executive.
