This excellent compilation on myiasis, which must long remain the reference work on its subject for the Old World, is compounded from the literature and the author's wide experience and extensive collections of material in Africa and his studies of collections elsewhere. It opens with an account of the probable evolution of different forms of myiasis, accepting the term as referring only to " the infestation of live human and vertebrate animals with larvae which, at least for a certain period, feed on the host's dead or living tissue, liquid body-substances, or ingested food ". A glossary of terms defining aural myiasis, and so on, proposes " sanguinivorous myiasis " to denote superficial attachment during blood sucking, as with larvae, while " pseudo-myiasis " is suggested for conditions of dead or living fly larvae accidentally swallowed but without specific parasitic association (although there may be clinical disturbance of some degree, as often occurs with muscid and calliphorid larvae and the cheese-skipper maggot). True intestinal myiasis of the specific obligatory kind characteristic, for example, of horse bot-flies is not known for man. Infestation by various fly maggots of the human rectum and bladder, are accepted as rectal and urinogenital myiasis, respectively, and attributed to migration of the larvae inwards from the orifices rather than by other route and subsequent passage within the body. The single long-standing report of the small phorid fly ), completing its life cycle and reproducing further, over a year, within the intestine of a European in Burma (he was addicted to eating candied fruits, which were infested) is dismissed as " simply not believable to a biologist".
