Turfgrass evaluation and analysis of factors inhibiting turfgrass growth under camphor trees.
摘要:
For identification of turfgrass adaptation to the environmental condition under camphor trees(Cinnamomum camphora),eight materials(cultivars, lines, and blend) of four species of cool-season turfgrass were evaluated in a field study beneath the canopies of five-year-old camphor trees in Jinshan District of Shanghai China from 2005 to 2007.Results from the field study showed that:Plantation tall fescue(Festuca arundinacea cv.Plantation) and Langara Kentucky bluegrass(Poa pratensis cv.Langara) were relatively more tolerant to environmental conditions under camphor trees, but none of them could survive under the environmental stress for more than nine months. For investigation of factors inhibiting turfgrass growth under camphor trees,powdered(2 mm in diameter) fallen leaves of camphor trees(fallen camphor leaf powder,FCLP),soils sampled from the 5-year-old camphor tree nursery(Camphor soil,CS),medium with addition of 33% FCLP to CS(1 FCLP:2 CS=m:m) and soils out of the nursery(fellow soil,FS,Control) were bioassayed against seed germination and seedling growth of tall fescue in two chambers at 40 and 120 μmol m-2 s-1 of photosynthetically active radiation(PAR) respectively. Results from the bioessay trial showed that:interaction between medium and light intensity was significant on seed germination and plant growth of tall fescue, and compared to FS,CS did not affect the germination and growth of tall fescue significantly under both light intensities, however, medium of 1 FCLP:2 CS significantly inhibited the seed germination by 19%~40% at 28 d after seeding and seedling height by 65%~83% at 7 d after seeding, while FCLP inhibited germination rate and seedling height more severely by 46%~68% and 92~95% respectively;the inhibition effects decreased with the days prolonged after seeding;plants can survive the low light intensity at 40 μmol·m-2·s-1 PAR with higher and slender seedlings than those at 120 μmol ·m-2·s-1 PAR and the latter appeared close to those under natural light intensities in morphology;Taken together with the results from the trials and the light intensities and temperatures under camphor trees,it is reasonably to infer that volatile allelopathic chemicals interacting with light intensity inhibited turfgrass growth and persistancy under the crowns of camphor trees. The results from this research could be applied for turf establishment and management under camphor trees.
