Lymphadenopathy simulating the malignant lymphomas

A discussion of the varieties of non-neoplastic and neoplastic lymphadenopathy that may simulate the malignant lymphomas is presented, with particular regard to the cytologic changes and the variety of architectural patterns associated with these disorders. Emphasis is placed upon the necessity for optimal handling of the lymph node biopsy, beginning with dexterity on the part of the surgeon and followed by adequate fixation and the preparation of technically ideal histologic sections. An appreciation of the spectrum of morphologic changes produced by a wide variety of antigenic stimuli upon the normal lymph node and the application of precise criteria for the recognition of malignant neoplasia of the lymphoreticular tissues should enable the pathologist to avoid erroneous interpretations.
