Various possibilities for the description of dephosphorization are discussed. The theoretical optical basicity is applied to the dephosphorization of iron melts with complex, lime-saturated oxidizing slags. For the phosphorus distribution between metal and (P 2 O 5 )-poor slags, the optical basicity is sufficient in a wide range of different slag compositions. In the area of lime saturation, the relation between optical basicity and characteristic data is not satisfying.
