The demographic effect of the slave trade on western Africa, 1500-1850
摘要:
The demographic effect of the slave trade on Western Africa between 1500 and 1850 is examined. Data from an eighteenth-century census of Angola and other sources are used to examine the age and sex characteristics of slaves exported. The author suggests that because the slave trade concentrated primarily on males its depopulating effect was minimized. (ANNOTATION)
