A smoke and fume producing device is provided in the form of a continuous elongated cord. The cord consists of a central igniter stem surrounded by the main pyrotechnic smoke charge and suitable outer coverings. The smoke charge preferably consists of a mixture of zinc oxide, a perchlorate oxidizer and a plasticized polyvinyl chloride resin and burns without flaming at a temperature of about 500 DEG C.
