Reducing the optical fiber diameter is desirable for reducing fiber cost and achieving high-density and high-count fiber cables. However, it causes strength deterioration and microbending loss increase. To overcome these shortcomings, a bunched optical fiber shown in Fig. 1(a) has been proposed.1 Individual core branching and connection with a conventional monocore fiber is one of the key technologies for the practical use of the bunched fiber.
