biodegradable matrices methods for preparing collagen-based sponge or in the form of sheet, wherein in one embodiment, a collagen-based material containing a collagen selected from the group consisting of collagens types I, II and III is lyophilized to form a sponge based on collagen, which is contacted with a crosslinking agent selected from the group consisting of a carbodiimide or a succinimidyl active ester to form an intermediate matrix based on collagen, subsequently subjected to severe dehydration conditions to form the collagen-based matrix in the form of sponge or sheet. In another embodiment, a sponge or a collagen-based sheet is first subjected to conditions of severe dehydration followed by contacting the intermediate matrix based on collagen thus formed with a crosslinking compound carbodiimide to form the collagen-based matrix in the form of sponge or sheet. In another embodiment, the crosslinking agent is mixed with the collagen-based material prior to formation of the sponge or collagen-based sheet, followed by processing steps of severe dehydration. In a preferred embodiment, a carrier compound is incorporated during processing to form a collagen-based matrix in the form of sponge or sheet form impregnated with a carrier compound wherein the carrier compound is selected from the group consisting of collagen types IV and V, fibronectin, laminin, hyaluronate, proteoglycan, epidermal growth factor, growth factor derived from platelets, the angiogenesis factor, an antibiotic, a fungicide agent , a spermicidal agent, enzyme and enzyme inhibitor.
