Process for coating the surface of a substrate composed of metal or ceramic in three-dimensional shape with a surface-reinforcing layer having good adhesion and at low temperature using a plasma gas phase deposition process, the deposited layer comprising: a multi-ply layer with one or more TiAlN layers (18a) and another layer (18b), with a composition in which the total amount of Ti, Al and N ranges from 50 to 100 AT% and the uppermost layer comprises as the reinforcing layer a TiAlN layer, a multi-ply layer with two or more TiAlN layers, (18a) with a composition of the total amount of Ti, Al and N from 50 to 100 AT% and with different levels of two or more of the elements Ti, Al and N, or a multi-ply layer with one or more TiAlN layers (18a) with a composition in which the total amount of Ti, Al and N ranges from 50 to 100% and two or more of these elements are present in a gradient content composition.
