The oxirane (I) is coupled with the lithium acetylide-ethylenediamine complex (II), forming the hydroxy alkyne (III) which is converted to the acid-sensitive 2,3-dihydrofuran (VI) by methylation with methyl iodide (IV) and subsequent treatment with a base.
