Electronic spectra of aqueous solutions and films made of liquid crystal ink for thin film polarizers

A new liquid crystal polarizer material based on modified dichroic dyes has been developed for optical applications. Thin Crystal Film (TCF) polarizers are produced from an aqueous solution of organic dye derivatives and their mixtures virtually on any substrate. A liquid crystal ink is a highly ordered precursor of a final solid crystalline film. This paper presents spectral characteristics of the dilute aqueous solutions of an initial individual blue and violet dyes and their mixtures in a wide concentration and ratio range. There is a strong correlation between optical parameters of dye solutions and TCF polarizers. Dye mixing allows for a design of polarizers with required performance characteristics, in particular, with an electronic absorption band in a selected spectral range. The analysis of spectral characteristics of dilute solutions of a two component polarizer material enables one to forecast the optical properties of the corresponding TCF polarizer and to determine the optimum composition of dye components.
