► Addition of biochar to soil increased the sorption of MCPA in soil. ► Increased sorption in soil+biochar decreased the leaching and dissipation of MCPA. ► Biochar itself had an effect on the growth of sunflower. ► Phytotoxicity of MCPA to sunflower was not affected by biochar addition to soil.
