Mixed polyglycols with an average molecular weight of at least 300 are prepared by interpolymerizing 0.1-9 mols. of styrene oxide with one mol. of at least one alkylene oxide having 2-4 carbon atoms/mol., by heating the liquid phase oxide mixture in presence of 1-10 per cent by weight of a glycol and 0.1-0.5 per cent of an alkali metal hydroxide at 80-200 DEG C. and under p superatmospheric pressure. Alkylene oxides mentioned are ethylene, 1,2-propylene, isobutylene and 1,2-butylene. Glycols mentioned are ethylene, propylene, butylene, dipropylene, triethylene, tripropylene, or phenyl ethylene. Preferably the glycol corresponds with one of the oxides in the reaction mixture. The glycol may be formed from the oxides by addition of a small quantity of water. The products are soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons and some of them in water. They are suitable as plasticizers, e.g. for polystyrene or ethyl cellulose or as emulsifying or dispersing agents. On completion of the reaction the catalyst is neutralized, e.g. with carbon dioxide, HCl or H2SO4 and the product freed from salts by washing and from unwanted components and low polymers by distillation. The colour may be improved by treatment with finely-divided charcoal.
