Magnetic susceptibility of uniform microcrystals of platinum
摘要:
The magnetic susceptibility of uniform platinum microcrystals having a mean diameter of 22.4 A has been measured by the Faraday technique from 1.5–200 K in fields of 2–13 kG. The susceptibility is independent of field, but becomes temperature dependent near 85 K and obeys the Curie law below about 20 K. The observed low-temperature behavior corresponds to about one unpaired electron per particle having spin-only paramagnetism. The results are compared to the theory of Denton et al., and it is concluded that the correct statistical distribution is the canonical, rather than the grand canonical, but that more extensive data are required to clearly differentiate among the various level-distribution ensembles.
