The invention concerns a method of extracting carotinoid dyes from pre-dried natural basic materials by means of compressed gases, such as propane and/or butane. In order to facilitate and complete the extraction process, organic entrainers can additionally be introduced. This method enables large yields of highly concentrated carotinoid dyes to be extracted.
