Mepolizumab for prednisone-dependent asthma with sputum eosinophilia.
摘要:
The article reports on the results of research which was conducted to determine the effect mepolizumab had on patients with prednisone dependent asthma with sputum eosinophilia and to determine if eosinophilic inflammation of the airway is associated with the risk of exacerbations of asthma. Researchers conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study of 61 subjects who had refractory eosinophilic asthma and a history of recurrent severe exacerbations. Researchers found that mepolizumab was associated with significantly fewer severe exacerbations than placebo over the course of 50 weeks, that there were no significant differences between the groups with respect to symptoms, FEV1 after bronchodilator use, or airway hyperresponsiveness, and that mepolizumab therapy reduces exacerbations and improves AQLQ scores in patients with refractory eosinophilic asthma. They concluded that eosinophils had a role as important effector cells in the pathogenesis of severe exacerbations of asthma in the patient population that they studied.
