Colliding vortex rings
摘要:
Laboratory observations of the interaction between pairs of vortex rings during certain collisions are described. The observed process consists of a rapid winding up and stretching of the vortex lines, which accelerates the viscous diffusion, which in turn causes the vortex lines to connect between the rings on either side of the contact region, producing a single, highly distorted ring made up of fluid from both of the original rings. This process is analyzed on the basis of the resonance of the forced motion with the elliptical oscillation mode of a single vortex, and the critical half-angle separating single ring formation from double is calculated as 16 deg. Experiments confirming the theoretical calculations are described.
