Particle size effects in ZnO/NiO mixed-metal oxides
摘要:
ZnO/NiO mixed-metal oxides were synthesized as co-pptd. nanoparticles and as bulk-scale ZnxNi1-xO solid solns. over a wide concn. range of 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.32. The materials were characterized structurally by AFM, XRD and Auger parameter anal. XPS was used to det. the chem. environment of the metals and also gave evidence of inhibition of Ni-Ni next-nearest-neighbor coupling through the Ni 2p peakshape. Bulk-scale (0.2m) ZnxNi1-xO forms a homogeneous rocksalt solid soln. in which Zn inhibits next-nearest-neighbor electronic coupling effectively by replacing the 3d8 Ni2+with Zn2+ 3d10 cations. The nanoparticles, which were synthesized by microemulsion, contain both rocksalt and wurtzite phases. Despite the biphasic nature of the nanoparticles, the Ni 2p XPS satellite structure exhibits differences from both bulk NiO, and bulk rocksalt ZnxNi1-xO in which Ni-Ni next-nearest neighbor coupling is enhanced. These differences are discussed in terms of the charge-transfer and Mott-Hubbard models of the NiO valence band structure. [on SciFinder(R)]
