When I first saw the title of this monograph, I anticipated learning at least two things from it: a social/cultural history of the forces of cosmopolitanism, nationalism, and individualism in modern China, and the historical significances and influence of the Chenbao Fukan during the New Culture era. After reading the whole book, I learned a lot about diverse topics that had been discussed in the newspaper supplement, including: 1) the visit of Rabindranath Tagore, Bertrand Russell, and Vasilii Eroshenko to China and how their works and perceptions of China were seen/read by well-known Chinese intellectuals and the supplement's readers; 2) the travelogues of the Fukan's readers and some famous Chinese intellectuals; 3) the issue of "reorganizing national heritage" as seen from the writings of prominent intellectuals such as Hu Shi, Liang Qichao and others; 4) a debate about love and marriage; and 5) a debate on translation practices in which different literary groups vied for "ownership" of the New Culture movement. I also discovered the different styles of the supplement's editors, and some of the salient features of the supplement (such as its frequent interaction with readers by publishing their letters).
