A dichroic dye, a color filter layer forming composition containing the dye, a color filter array substrate containing the color filter layer, and an LCD containing the substrate are provided to improve dichroism, heat resistance, durability, contrast and polarization. A dichroic dye has a structure represented by R1-L1-M-L2-D, wherein D is a dichroic structure; M is a liquid crystalline structure; R1 is a terminal reactive functional group; and L1 and L2 are a linking structure for connecting R1, M and D. Preferably the dichroic structure D is selected from the group consisting of azo, anthraquinone, azomethine, indigo, thioindigo, cyanine, indane, azulene, perylene, phthaloperin and azine-based dyes.
