Critically examines evidence of genetic variation in resource use by insects, including consideration of host-associated differences in fitness and genetic variation in preference. Implications of such evidence include the need to understand the prevalence of resource-associated polymorphisms, processes of coevolution, and resource specialisation, and there are consequences regarding an understanding of speciation (ie sympatric speciation by adaptation to different resources such as hosts). -P.J.Jarivs
