A pistol adapted to provide selective double action is described. The pistol comprises a slide mounted on a frame which houses the barrel and the firing mechanism. The firearm can be field-stripped quickly and the low position of the barrel reduces the effect of recoil on firing accuracy. The firing mechanism comprises a number of parts disposed in a multi-layered arrangement which reduces the overall size of the pistol.
