The importance of surface area in the cytotoxicity of zinc phosphate and silicate cements in vitro

Increasing the surface area of similar volumes of zinc phosphate and silicate cements results in an increase in the in vitro cytotoxicity of these materials. In general there was a proportionate decrease in cellular β-galactosidase and LDH levels with a corresponding rise in supernatant levels. Mouse macrophages were more sensitive than hamster fibroblasts. Enzyme cytochemistry demonstrated a labilization of lysosomal and a stabilization of mitochondrial membranes. pH changes were negligible and did not appear to account for the changes observed.
