The oil burner has a flame tube which is connected to a fan for the combustion air, and an atomiser (3) lying in the flame tube. The atomiser (3) is connected to an oil admission conduit (21) and a compressed air conduit (11) and forms a mixing chamber (15) for preparing an air/oil mixture, which flows towards an atomiser nozzle (4). In order to be able to use this burner also for burning used oils (waste oils), lubricating oil residues or heavy fuel oils in a functionally reliable manner, and without danger of stopping-up, the atomiser (3) has an inlet channel (13) arranged upstream of the mixing chamber (15) and narrowing to form a throttle position (14), the compressed air conduit (11) opening into the inlet channel (13) upstream of the throttle position, and an oil supply channel (10) connected to the oil admission conduit (21) opening into the inlet channel (13) in the throttle position. <IMAGE>
